How to clean your windows properly

Cleaning windows can be a simple task if you follow the correct approach. Here's a step-by-step guide on the proper way to clean windows:

  1. Gather the necessary supplies: You will need the following items:

    • Window cleaning solution or a mixture of mild dish soap and water.
    • Clean, lint-free cloths or microfiber towels.
    • Squeegee.
    • Bucket.
    • Window scraper (for removing stubborn debris, if necessary).
    • Extension pole (for reaching high windows, if needed).
  2. Prepare the cleaning solution: If you're using a store-bought window cleaning solution, follow the instructions on the bottle. If you're making your own solution, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water in a bucket. Avoid using harsh chemicals like ammonia, bleach, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage window surfaces.

  3. Remove dust and debris: Use a dry cloth or a brush to gently remove any loose dirt, dust, or cobwebs from the window frames, sills, and corners. This step prevents dirt from smearing on the glass during the cleaning process.

  4. Wet the window: Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution, wring out excess liquid, and apply it to the window glass. Make sure to wet the entire surface evenly.

  5. Clean the glass: Starting from the top of the window, use the squeegee to wipe the glass in a downward motion. Overlap each stroke to prevent streaks. After each stroke, wipe the squeegee blade with a clean, lint-free cloth or towel to remove excess moisture.

  6. Dry the edges: Use a dry cloth or towel to wipe the edges of the window, removing any excess water or cleaning solution. This step helps prevent water spots or streaks from forming.

  7. Check for streaks and spots: Inspect the window for any streaks or spots. If you notice any, you can re-wet the affected area with the cleaning solution and use a clean cloth or squeegee to remove them.

  8. Clean stubborn stains or debris: If there are stubborn stains, bird droppings, or adhesive residue on the window, use a window scraper or a soft, non-abrasive sponge to gently remove them. Be cautious not to scratch the glass.

  9. Clean the window frames and sills: Dampen a cloth with the cleaning solution and wipe down the window frames and sills. Pay attention to corners and crevices where dirt may accumulate.

  10. Dry and shine: To give your windows a sparkling finish, buff the glass with a clean, dry cloth or a microfiber towel. This step removes any remaining moisture and leaves the windows looking clear and shiny.

  11. Remember, it's best to clean windows on a cloudy day or when the glass is not directly exposed to the sun. Direct sunlight can cause the cleaning solution to dry quickly, leading to streaks and a less effective clean.
