Carpets can either make or break the over-all appearance and
look of your home.
A dirty, torn carpet reveals that the homeowners have not
been taking care of them over the years.
On the other hand, a clean and beautiful
carpet evokes a warm welcome to all those entering the house. Fresh-smelling,
soft and fluffy carpets make a grand statement that the health and hygiene of
those living in the home are always the top priority.
Cleaning carpets at home
seems like a very tedious task but people with busy lifestyles and hectic
schedules will be happy to know that there are 8 carpet cleaning hacks anyone
can use.
With just a few easy steps and a bit of elbow grease, it is now
possible to keep your carpets looking as good as new and as spotless as the day
you bought them from the store.
Regular Vacuuming
Because carpets suffer through the wear and tear of constant foot traffic, dirt, soil and mud can easily collect between the fibres over time.
Before you know it, a light-coloured carpet already looks dreary and full of grime.
It is always a great idea to vacuum the carpets in your home at least once a week.
Focus more on the areas where people often step on or sit on as well as the corners where tiny particles of dust can become dust balls and pools of dirt.
Some vacuum cleaners even have attachments that can beat dust off carpets and rugs so it is easier for the machine to suck out all the particles.
A weekly schedule of vacuuming your carpets will reduce the chances of
allergens and pollutants from accumulating and causing your family members to
suffer from allergic reactions such as hay fever and asthma attacks.
Fluffy Carpets Hack
If you have coffee tables or heavy furniture pieces that weigh down your carpets, you may notice that the weighed-down parts of your carpets are not as fluffy as when they were brand new.
Carpets that are often walked-on will eventually lose their signature fluffy look.
You may be surprised to know that ice cubes can be used to spruce up the dented areas of a carpet.
Put some ice cubes on the flattened parts and allow to dissolve.
Once
the ice cubes have dissolved, gently blot the area with a soft and clean towel.
It is best to air-dry the affected areas and run a vacuum on the fibres to separate
the hardened sections.
Smell Eliminators
Pets love to sleep on carpets and some fur-babies can sleep
for 10 to 12 hours a day.
It is often unavoidable to have your pets’ smell
stick to the carpets.
Mix borax powder, baking soda and a few drops of carpet-safe
essential oils and sprinkle that eco-friendly mixture to your carpets.
Let it
sink in for a few minutes and vacuum it as per normal.
If possible, always
air-out the carpets that are used frequently by your pets.
A very warm day is
the best time to clean a carpet as the heat from the sun will not just kill off
some bacteria but will also remove bad pet odours from your carpets.
These
odours can easily affect other parts of the house if your home is not
well-ventilated.
Lint Rollers and a Squeegee
Just as mentioned above, pets will play and nap on your carpets throughout the day and every pet-owner knows that some pets just shed hair all the time.
When you have pets with lots of fur and carpets with
materials that easily stick to carpet fibres, you need to keep some stocks of
lint rollers.
They are easy to use and can get rid of the majority of fur that
your pets have shed off.
A humble housewife in Europe has discovered that a
cheap Squeegee is not just for cleaning glass surfaces and windows in her
house, but it was surprisingly able to clean her carpet as well.
She was able
to remove cat fur and tons of dust that have been embedded inside the carpet.
Hot Iron
This hack is not just great for using a hot iron after it
has been used for pressing clothes, but it can also be used for removing stains
such as candle wax and nail polish.
Spray some vinegar and water to the stained
area, cover that with a piece of cloth and over that material, put the hot
iron.
Wait until the heated vinegar mixture can dissolve the stain.
The heat
from the iron will transfer the stain from the carpet to the cloth so make sure
you use a cleaning cloth or an old piece of clothing that you want to make use
of.
Home-made, Environmentally Friendly Carpet Shampoo
For those who are concerned about using harmful commercially
produced carpet cleansers, you can make your own at home by mixing the below
common household items:
1. One gallon of hot water: distilled is best as tap water
contains chlorine that is not suitable for some carpets
2. Few drops of essential oil
3. 2/3 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide
4. Half cup of distilled or natural white vinegar
5. 2 tablespoons of organic or plant-based soap
You now have your own eco-friendly carpet shampoo that you
can use to clean your carpets but only if they are safe to be laundered or safe
for water-washes.
Effective Stain Removers
Do you know that people have made use of rubbing alcohol,
hair sprays and after-shave creams to remove difficult to remove stains from
lipstick, pen markers and nail polish spills?
The trick is to use these items
on a small area of your carpet first to test if the colour will run.
Never rub
vigorously and use a microfibre cloth to dab on the stain until it transfers to
the cloth.
Use Area Rugs and Runners
The last hack make seem like a redundant process but
homeowners have long relied on this.
To really protect your carpets from heavy
traffic such as in entry ways and stairs, it is best to use runners and area
rugs to cover these spots.
This method will actually save you more money in the long run as heavy and constant traffic on carpets will eventually cause major damage that cleaning hacks may not be able to fully solve.
