7 easy steps to clean your fridge

Cleaning your fridge is an important task to ensure food safety and maintain a clean and hygienic environment. Here's a step-by-step guide on the correct way to clean your fridge:

  1. Preparation:

    • Turn off and unplug the fridge to ensure safety and save energy.
    • Remove all the items from the fridge and place them in a cooler with ice packs to keep them cold while you clean.
  2. Emptying and Sorting:

    • Take out all the shelves, drawers, and removable parts from the fridge.
    • Discard any expired or spoiled food items.
    • Sort the remaining items, wiping off any spills or debris, and place them aside.
  3. Interior Cleaning:

    • Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts of warm water and mild dish soap or a solution of equal parts of water and vinegar.
    • Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the solution and gently scrub the interior surfaces, including the walls, shelves, and drawers.
    • Pay special attention to any stains, spills, or sticky areas.
    • Avoid using abrasive cleaners, bleach, or harsh chemicals as they can damage the fridge's surfaces.
    • For tough stains or odors, you can use a baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with water) or a commercial refrigerator cleaner following the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Rinse the cloth or sponge frequently and change the cleaning solution if it becomes dirty.
  4. Shelves, Drawers, and Door Seals:

    • Wash the shelves and drawers with the same cleaning solution or warm soapy water.
    • For stubborn stains or stuck-on food, you can soak them in the solution for a few minutes before scrubbing.
    • Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue and allow them to air dry.
    • Clean the door seals (gaskets) using a mild solution of water and vinegar, and wipe them dry.
  5. Exterior Cleaning:

    • Wipe the exterior surfaces of the fridge, including the doors, handles, and control panel, with a damp cloth and mild soap or vinegar solution.
    • Dry the surfaces with a clean, dry cloth.
  6. Reassembling and Restocking:

    • Once everything is dry, put the shelves, drawers, and removable parts back into the fridge.
    • Return the food items to the fridge, ensuring they are properly organized and labeled.
    • Check the expiry dates and discard any expired products.
  7. Powering On:

    • Plug the fridge back in and allow it to cool for approximately 15-30 minutes before returning perishable items.
    • Adjust the temperature settings as needed.

Remember to clean your fridge regularly, ideally once every three months or as needed, to maintain cleanliness and food safety.
